ABOUT SARAH

My name is Sarah Wood. I am 18 years old and live in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago. I have two younger brothers who keep things interesting in my home. I started Irish dancing when I was five years old. My mom took Irish dancing for 17 years, so she couldn’t wait to enroll me in Irish dancing once I was at the appropriate age. I also play the flute and love listening to all types of music.
My love of Irish dancing began early. After some cold feet about being in a new environment with different friends, I became pretty smitten with Irish dancing. I especially love the complex foot movements of it. Thanks to Riverdance putting Irish dance on the global stage, people of all races and ethnicities participate in Irish dance. I am particularly in awe of how many countries are represented in the World Championships each year.
I know that many kids just want to learn the basics of Irish dance without the commitment of long classes and expensive costumes. I formed i dance for a CHANCE to be able to share the gift of Irish dance with young people at an affordable price. I think it would be cool to teach children the basics of Irish dance with a greater purpose in mind. That’s where another one of my passions, feeding the homeless, comes into play. I have been volunteering with my family at the Dignity Diner, a homeless diner in the nearby Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago, since I was 9 years old. I grew to really enjoy the experience of helping out the homeless population. I know that due to COVID-19, donations are needed for food pantries even more. That’s when I came up with the idea of charging a small fee to teach kids how to Irish dance and using the money raised to donate to the Dignity Diner so I could give back to the homeless in my own community.
I would be honored to teach your child the basics of Irish dance. In addition to teaching beginner Irish dancing classes, I also have three years of student teaching experience, both in the Irish dancing setting and in a modern dance genre.
